Matthew 11:28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (NKJV)
A servant is dependent on the Master for all things - provision, instructions, relief, compassion... whatever the need may be. Unlike the worldly idea of servitude which has the "master" as another selfish, imperfect and incomplete human being, our Master is perfect in all ways. He cares for us perfectly, provides for us perfectly, chastises us perfectly and guides us perfectly. This is a true blessing for us. As servants, we are not menial slaves with no value to the master, but we are His prized possessions, whom He cares about and loves in all ways. So we can rest in knowing that He is the source of everything we need to live a good and holy life (2Pet 1.3).
Rest. What does that mean exactly? Is it sleep? Is it leisure time? Is it a lack of responsibility? Rest is the deep, stress-relieving, peace-cultivating assurance that all is well, all is taken care of, all is provided and all is secure. All. Why all? Because this assurance that "all is well" is not dependent on my abilities, my power or my performance. All is well because my Master is the Creator-Sustainer of the Universe and not one single atom of this universe escapes His attention or control.
If I truly believe that Jesus Christ my Savior is my Master, and the King of Universe, and the Creator of All, then why, oh why, would I choose to be anxious or concerned about this life? If I believe that Jesus is All-Knowing, All-Powerful and All-Present then what care or circumstance should ever cause me to worry? What need should ever give me concern? What situation should ever cause me to fear?
If I believe that Jesus Christ is perfectly loving, caring and merciful, how could I ever feel lonely, forsaken or forgotten?
If I believe that Jesus, my Master, is the source of my strength and life, then what prevents me from giving up my own anxious, stressed-out striving? What keeps me from finding rest and peace in Him? (Answer: nothing, except my own choice to pretend to be my own master instead of totally surrendering to Him at all times).
If you are weary and burdened, tired and worn, stressed and anxious - there is rest waiting for you - find it as a humble servant, safe in the arms of Jesus.
Lord God, help us to learn to truly rest in You, knowing that NOTHING in this life is worth our anxiety or toiling. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
James 1:22 - But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. (NKJV)
- What is the most obvious Bible truth you have learned today?
- What change in your life needs to be made concerning this truth?
- What specific thing will you do today to begin that change?
Has
this teaching helped you or been a blessing?
Then other people would probably be blessed by it too. |
